What is blogging?
A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.
Why is a blog important?
Blogging is a great way to get more traffic from the right audience for three reasons. First, search engines will give your websites more “love” if you have fresh content, and writing a blog is a great way to add fresh content on a regular basis. Second, people typically just don’t link to a boring corporate website, but they will link to an interesting blog article, so blogging will help you get more links. Finally, if your blog is set up correctly, each blog article is its own webpage and therefore is a unique SEO opportunity, so you can really capture a lot of long tail (highly focused and narrow) traffic using a blog. Additionally, blogs allow you to engage your customers in a dialogue and humanize your brand.
Marketers feel that this is a more efficient use of their resources because advertisements are not sent to people that are not interested in the product. This is one technique used by marketers that have a personal marketing orientation. They feel that marketing should be done on a one-to-one basis rather than using broad aggregated concepts like market segment or target market.
